The
Clerk of the Course declared the track to be still
wet and therefore all competitors were forced to line
up on the starting grid with rain tyres. But it was
not raining any more, so it could be easily thought
that in the second half of the race at least the trajectories
would have dried up. These were definitely not the
best conditions to compete for the last 6 places available
in the title Finals. At the start, two warm-up laps
were required to achieve an optimum alignment, and
De Marchi and Iacuzzo had to pay for it, both stopped
by their sparking plugs that went out. Also Luca Carone
suffered from some problems at the start, but still
managed to go with the group, and is 25th after the
first lap. Franco D’Urso took the lead, instead,
ahead of Englishman Hawkey, Garulli, Grampa, Pica,
Macri, Russian Kramarskiy and Baroni. In the 5th lap,
D’Urso and Hawkey were 2’’ ahead
of the large pursuing group led by Emilia Kart driver
Garulli. The 4th position was occupied by excellent
Kramarskiy, feeling perfectly at ease on the wet track,
then Pica, Macrì, Grampa, Baroni, Fucchi, Campo,
American Joe Iannucci, Villa and Todisco. The contest
for the places 3rd to 6th was hard-fought and as many
as 10 drivers were involved. In the 9th lap, Macrì
overtook Kramarskiy to gain the 4th position, while
Fucchi and Baroni took turns twice alternating in
the 6th position: at stake was the last place to qualify
for the title Finals. In the course of the 13th lap,
Macrì attacked Garulli, too, but the Blu Racing
driver missed the proper trajectory at a bend and
contact was unavoidable. Macrì was forced to
withdraw, having to renounce to a qualification that
was easily within his reach, while Garulli managed
to carry on even if he was then overtaken by Kramarskiy.
In the 15th lap, the leading pair was still formed
by D’Urso and Hawkey, divided by 2’’
seconds. Behind them the race was still open among
Garulli, Kramarskiy, Baroni, Grampa, Campo, Pica and
Iannucci. In the central group, instead, a close contest
took place between Scotti, Russo, Todisco and Bernuzzi.
In the final laps of the race, lapped drivers played
an important role creating high-tension situations
for the higher sections of the ranking. The scrimmage
caused a 180-degree spin for Grampa (17th lap), and
also Fucchi and Pica found themselves too close: the
first one went spinning at the Railway bend and forced
Pica off the track and consequently to withdraw from
the race. After 24 heated laps, D’Urso won the
race, 2’’ ahead of Hawkey. There was almost
a photo finish final spurt for the third place, with
Kramarskiy ahead of Garulli, Fucchi and Baroni. Excluded
from the qualified drivers by a hair’s breadth
was Grampa, 7th, followed by Villa, Joe Iannucci,
Meraviglia, Carone, Scotti, Russo, Todisco and Bernuzzi.
