VIETS BECOMES CHAMPION WITH ONE LAST MASTERSTROKE

When the green light lit, the German Viets, who was in pole position, took the lead in front of Fichera, Mercatelli, Campo and the International reigning champion Renzo Calcinati. Andrea Villa, Baiguini, Lagodjuk, Deltsov, Napolitano and Munoz followed. During the 2nd lap, the Russian Deltsov overtook his countryman Lagodjuk and reached the 8th position, whereas later on, Fichera overtook Viets at the 1st paddock hairpin bend. During the 6th lap, the German driver also gave way to Meratelli, who overtook him at the end of the stretch. But the three drivers on the lead stayed very close to each other, gaining metres over Calcinati and Campo. Further back, the Venzuelan Munoz drew attention to himself by getting in the lee of Villa and Baiguini in 8th position. At the 12th lap Lagodjuk withdrew, whereas Mercatelli managed to overtake Fichera. Before the 20th lap, Viets also managed to overtake the Sicilian driver; a highly tense end of race among the three claimants to the title was to ensue. On the other hand, Renzo Calcinati seemed to be definitely k.o.: the representative of Superteam was in fact 4” behind. During the penultimate lap, Viets made his winning move against Mercatelli in the middle section of the track: with only a 167-thousandths margin on his opponent, the German driver conquered both the International and the Italian title, racing with Fik licence. Fichera had to make do with 3rd place, whereas Caclinati was 4th in front of Campo and the Venezuelan Munoz. Baiguini finished the race in 7th place in front of Villa, Deltsov and Napolitano. Venturi, Baroni, Milanesi, the British Jones, Sommariva and Malberti finished behind the top ten.

The winner Sascha Viets commented: “In the final I had a few tyre problems, although I must say that, generally speaking, thanks to the hard work of the Fg Racing Team, my kart’s trim and engine were perfect; during the last laps I managed to overtake both Mercatelli and Fichera after a fair duel which was great fun. Both drivers turned out to be very tough! I am very happy to have won this important race.”
