EASYKART 125: COBIANCHI GRABS BOTH
THE ITALIAN AND INTERNATIONAL TITLES WHILE A PILE-UP DRIVES
FEDERICO MONTOYA OUT
THE ENGAGING COLOMBIAN DRIVER WHO SPRINTED TO THE LEAD WAS
ELIMINATED FOLLOWING CONTACT WITH GAGLIANO AFTER 3 LAPS.
COBIANCHI MOVED UP TO THE HIGHEST RANKING ON AN ALL ITALIAN
PODIUM IN FRONT OF ROTA AND EMILIANO CERVONI.
Federico
Montoya, brother of the famous F1 driver, was eagerly expected
to perform in the 125 category in Arce in the afternoon.
And the Colombian did not disappoint expectations, receiving
a first row qualification. Only the 16-year old Fabio Rota
from Lombardy was able to do better than him by receiving
a memorable pole position. The current National Vice-Champion
Gagliano and the 2003 National Champion Yoshino Takeshi
qualified in the 2nd row. Cobianchi, winner of two races
during the season, and Niccolò Baroni both started
in the third row. The Latium Emiliano Cervoni, the Central
Area Champion, started in the 4th row. At the green light,
Montoya immediately took the lead even though he was on
the outside, followed closely behind by Gagliano. Rota passed
into 3rd in front of Cobianchi, Cervoni and Takeshi. At
the paddock braking turn, Gagliano took a chance and tried
to overtake Montoya, but he went onto the front half of
the Colombian's kart which was out of the race after only
three laps. Gagliano was able to return to the track, while
Montoya was forced to park on the lawn. Cobianchi, thus
took the lead and at the first lap was in front of Emiliano
Cervoni, Irish Scarlato, Ezio Cervoni, Rota, Baroni, Ballarini,
Takeshi and Alberto Cola. During the first lap, Filippo
Macor and Samulele Chiesa were involved in a hook-up and
fell to the rear. At the 2nd lap, Scarlato successfully
attacked Emiliano Cervoni and at the following lap he repeated
the manouevre with Cobianchi, taking on the lead. At this
stage, Scarlato was the fastest on track and tried to gain
the most lead on his opponents. It is obvious that the VRK
team driver opted for the first stage of the race because
of tyre pressure. At the 5th lap, Emiliano Cervoni overcame
Cobianchi and moved up to the 2nd place. But two laps later,
the Blu Racing driver was right behind Scarlato and attacking
the Latium driver once again. At the 10th lap another contact
put Luca Fioravanti and Alberto Cola - two of the most promising
participants in the Final - out of the race. In the meantime,
the first 10 drivers were all wrapped up together attracting
the entire audience's attention. Scarlato was the leader
of the race with almost 2” advantage over Cobianchi,
that on the other hand was pressed closely by both Emiliano
Cervoni and by Rota. The National Champion, Takeshi was
5th and had to contrast Ezio Cervoni's attack. Baroni sailed
through at 7th, in front of Alessandra Neri that was struggling
with Compagnone, the recovering Marco Gagliano, Ballarini,
Vasone and Ferro. At the 11th lap, Rota gained another position
by overtaking Emiliano Cervoni, while Cobianchi recovered
ground over Scarlato. The VRK team driver gradually hindered
by his tyres just around the 15th lap, allowed Cobianchi
to take the lead in the race. Progressively, he was overtaken
also by Rota and Cervoni. At this stage of the race, Rota
became extremely effective and recovered ground right on
Cobianchi's trajectory. Gagliano was also very fast, but
after reaching 6th place behind Takeshi, he jeopardised
his recovery and most of all the Japanese's race, by running
into the Japanese driver as he was attempting a risky overtake.
Once again Gagliano was able to continue, while the Superteam
leading driver was out of the race. The last stages of the
race witnessed Rota pressing Cobianchi, but the stakes were
too high, and the FM team drive did not want to take unnecessary
risks, so he closed the race just behind the experienced
Emilian. After 28 long and demanding laps, Cobianchi was
able to capture a double-worth success: a National and International
title. Together with him, Rota and Emiliano Cervoni also
won a place on the podium that is worth twice. Scarlato
finished in 4th, defending his position over Ezio Cervoni.
But when weights were taken, Scarlato proved to be underweight
by 1 Kg and was consequently excluded from the ranking.
Cervoni thus passed into 4th place, in front of Baroni and
Gagliano. Alessandra Neri duelled on her own with Compagnone
for 20 laps, while Ballarini finished in 9th in front of
De Castro, Vasone, Ferro, Centofanti, Baldon, Gagliardini
and Fabrizio Pirovano. The former motorbike world champion,
a karting enthusiast, ran an excellent race, even though
a contact which resulted in a slew around during the central
part of the race, prevented him from entering the top ten.
Behind Pirovano, Chiesa, the Ecuadorian Feire, Macor and
Villalobos all finished their race.
